Quick answer: A single-car garage door is 8×7, 9×7 or 10×7 — width first, height second, in feet. The 8×7 is the narrow standard found in older Toronto homes; the 9×7 is the most common single across the GTA. Royal installs all three from $1,350, $1,500 and $1,650 + tax respectively, fully installed with your old door removed. Design your door or book a free measurement.

Single-Car Garage Door Sizes & Prices

Every price below is supply and install — the door itself, all hardware, weatherstripping, labour, removal and disposal of the old door, and a safety check before we leave. There is no separate call-out charge and no weekend or holiday surcharge.

Size Best for Where you'll see it Installed from (+ tax)
8×7 Compact and mid-size cars Toronto homes built before ~1980 $1,350
9×7 — most common single Sedans, minivans, mid-size SUVs GTA homes built since the 1990s $1,500
10×7 Full-size pickups, wide bays Newer builds, detached garages $1,650

Window inserts are +$125 per window. A garage door opener is not included in these prices and starts from $630 if you need one — most replacements reuse the existing opener, and we will tell you on site whether yours is worth keeping. If you would rather supply your own installer, door-only delivery starts from $850.

Two Single Doors? Replace Them Together

A large share of GTA homes — especially the older detached stock — have a two-car garage with two separate single openings and a centre post between them, rather than one wide opening. If that is your garage, the sensible move when one door fails is usually to replace both in the same visit, and the reasons are practical rather than promotional.

You pay for access once. The crew, the truck and the setup are the same whether they hang one door or two. Splitting the work across two visits months apart means buying that access twice. Two 8×7 doors run $2,700 + tax installed for the pair, and the second door adds roughly two hours rather than a second full day.

And two doors side by side are one façade. From the street nobody reads them as separate objects. A new door next to a twenty-year-old one does not just look different — it makes the older door look worse than it did the day before, because there is now something to compare it against. Colour fade, panel dents and a dated design all become visible at once.

We are not going to pretend two doors cost less than one. A 15×7 or 16×7 double covering the same span is $2,300, about $400 less than the pair. What the pair buys you is independent operation — if one opener fails the other car still gets out — slightly better sealing at the edges, and the fact that you are not choosing anyway: your garage already has one opening or two, and converting between them is structural work that is rarely worth the cost.

If only one of your doors has genuinely failed and the other is sound, replacing the one is the right call and we will say so. Book a free measure and we will look at both.

How to Tell Whether You Need an 8×7 or a 9×7

Measure the finished opening in the garage wall, not the door you are replacing — an old door can be undersized, oversized or fitted badly, and copying its dimensions repeats someone else's mistake.

  • Width — measure between the inside faces of the side jambs, at the widest point. Around 8 feet means an 8×7; around 9 feet means a 9×7.
  • Height — floor to the underside of the header. Standard is 7 feet.
  • Headroom — top of the opening to the ceiling. A standard torsion system needs about 12 inches; less than that needs a low-headroom track kit.
  • Sideroom — wall space either side of the opening, about 3.75 inches minimum per side for the tracks.
  • Backroom — depth into the garage, roughly the door height plus 18 inches.

If a number lands between two standard sizes, do not guess — that is exactly what the free in-home measure is for, and getting it wrong means a door that never seals properly against a GTA winter.

What You Get for the Price

  • Insulated sectional steel door panels, 2 inches thick, R-18
  • All hardware — track, rollers, hinges, torsion spring system sized to your door
  • Full perimeter weatherstripping and a new bottom seal
  • Professional installation by IDEA-certified technicians
  • Removal and disposal of your old door — nothing left in your driveway
  • Balance and safety check before we leave
  • 1-year labour, 5-year hardware, lifetime panel warranty against rust-through

Free service call with any installation. If you have us out to assess and decide not to proceed, the diagnostic fee is $120 — stated up front, never a surprise.

Styles and Colours

Single doors come in the same range as doubles: flush modern, long panel, short panel and carriage-house, in white, almond, sandstone, brown, charcoal and black, with optional window inserts across the top section. The door designer shows each combination on screen with the price updating as you change it — worth five minutes before we visit, so the conversation starts from something you have already seen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is a single-car garage door?

A single-car garage door is 8, 9 or 10 feet wide and 7 feet tall — written 8×7, 9×7 and 10×7, with the width always stated first. The 8×7 is the narrow standard and is common in older Toronto homes built for smaller cars; the 9×7 is the most common single door in GTA homes built since the 1990s; the 10×7 suits wider single bays and full-size pickups. All three are 7 feet tall as standard, and 8-foot heights are available for lifted trucks or roof racks.

How much does a single garage door cost installed in Toronto?

At Royal Garage Doors a supply-and-install single door starts from $1,350 + tax for an 8×7, $1,500 for a 9×7 and $1,650 for a 10×7. That price is all-in: the door panels, all hardware, weatherstripping, professional installation, removal and disposal of your old door, and a safety check. Window inserts add $125 per window. A garage door opener is not included and starts from $630 if you need one. Door-only delivery without installation starts from $850.

Is an 8×7 garage door a standard size?

Yes. The 8×7 is a standard stock size, not a custom order, so it carries standard pricing and lead times. It is the narrower of the two common singles and appears most often in Toronto homes built before roughly 1980, when garages were sized for smaller cars. If your opening measures close to but not exactly 8 feet, a stock 8×7 will usually still be the right door — the frame and weatherseal absorb small differences. We confirm the exact opening on site before ordering.

What is the difference between an 8×7 and a 9×7 garage door?

One foot of width and about $150 in installed price. The practical difference is clearance: an 8-foot opening is comfortable for a compact or mid-size car but tight for a full-size SUV or pickup, particularly if the driveway approaches at an angle. A 9×7 gives noticeably easier entry. You cannot simply order the wider door, though — the door has to match the finished opening in your garage wall. Widening an opening from 8 to 9 feet is structural work involving the header, so it is only worth considering during a larger renovation.

I have two single garage doors — should I replace both at once?

If both are original, yes, and for two reasons that have nothing to do with a discount. First, cost of access: replacing them separately means paying for two visits instead of one, since the crew, the truck and the setup are the same either way. Second, appearance: two doors side by side are read as one façade from the street, and a new door next to a twenty-year-old one makes the older door look worse than it did before. Two 8×7 doors run $2,700 installed for the pair. If only one door has actually failed and the other is sound, replacing the one is perfectly reasonable — we will tell you honestly which situation you are in.

How long does a single garage door installation take?

A straightforward single-door replacement takes about three to four hours, including removing and hauling away the old door, installing the new panels, track and springs, fitting the weatherseal and balancing the door. Two single doors on the same visit take roughly six hours rather than double the time, because the setup and teardown happen once. We book a single arrival window and complete the work in one day.

Does a new single garage door come with a warranty?

Yes — one year on labour, five years on hardware, and a lifetime panel warranty against rust-through perforation. The warranty is the same whether you replace one door or two.
