Decision Guide

Repair a Panel vs. Replace It — How to Decide

Not every dented panel needs full replacement. Here is how we assess the damage.

Panel Can Be Repaired

  • Small dent under 3 inches, paint intact
  • No buckle or crease through the panel
  • Struts and reinforcing bars undamaged
  • Single cosmetic impact from a minor bump
  • Paint can be touched up to match

Panel Needs Replacement

  • Buckled, creased, or folded steel skin
  • Broken internal struts or reinforcing bars
  • Cracked aluminum or composite surface
  • Panel is crushed or torn from vehicle impact
  • Multiple sections damaged in same panel

When to Replace the Whole Door Instead

If more than two panels are damaged, the door is 20+ years old with discontinued parts, or the total panel repair cost exceeds 50% of a comparable new door price — we recommend a full replacement. You get a better warranty, improved insulation, and a fresh appearance. We give you both quotes and let you decide.

Our Process

How We Match Your Existing Panel

Matching a replacement panel to an existing door requires more than finding the right color. Profile, emboss pattern, skin thickness, insulation layer, and hardware spacing all need to align. Here is our process.

1
On-Site Measurement & Documentation

We photograph the damaged panel and measure panel height, width, and thickness. We note the profile design (raised rectangular, short raised, long raised, carriage house) and any embossing pattern.

2
Manufacturer Identification

From the hardware, track system, and door spec label (usually inside the top panel or on the opener beam), we identify the manufacturer and door series. Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, Garaga, and CHI all have distinct panel profiles.

3
Color Matching

Common colors — white, almond, sandstone, desert tan, black — are stocked by suppliers. Custom colors require ordering from the manufacturer with a 5–10 business day lead time.

4
Panel Sourcing & Delivery

We source the matching panel from our GTA supplier network. In-stock panels can often be delivered and installed same-day or next-day.

5
Installation & Rebalancing

The replacement panel is installed, all hinge bolts torqued to spec, and the door is rebalanced to confirm the spring tension is appropriate for the new panel weight.

FAQ

Panel Replacement Questions Answered

How much does garage door panel replacement cost?

Single panel replacement costs $500–$1,000 + tax depending on the panel size, material (steel, aluminum, composite), insulation value, and design style. We source matching panels from our supplier network to maintain your door's original appearance. A full quote is provided after measuring your existing door.

Can a damaged garage door panel be repaired instead of replaced?

Minor dents (under 3 inches) in steel panels can sometimes be pulled using a PDR (paintless dent repair) technique if the paint is intact. However, panels with buckled steel, broken reinforcing struts, cracked aluminum skins, or crushed sections cannot be safely repaired and must be replaced. We assess both options and recommend the most cost-effective path.

Will the replacement panel match my existing door?

In most cases, yes. For steel doors manufactured in the last 15 years, replacement panels from the same manufacturer are typically available in matching profiles and common colors. For older doors or discontinued product lines, we source the closest available match. When an exact match is not available, we clearly advise you before proceeding.

When should I replace the whole door instead of just one panel?

Replace the entire door when: (1) more than two panels are damaged, (2) the door is over 20 years old and parts are discontinued, (3) the door frame or track system is damaged, or (4) the cost of panel replacement exceeds 50% of a new door cost. We will give you honest guidance — sometimes a single-panel fix is the right answer; sometimes a new door is the better investment.
